Are mail in rebates worth it…….YES!

My local CVS had some great deals this week and the best ones involve mail in rebates.  I combine store sales, Extra Care Bucks, and coupons to get stuff for FREE.  At CVS if you bought $12.00 worth of Colgate-Pamolive items they gave you $6 ECB and in my local sunday paper there was a Colgate-Pamolive MIR of $5.00 if you spent $10.00.

Transaction #1:   2 Irish Spring Bodywashes @ $3.00 each  &  2 Softsoap Pumps @$3.00 each

Total of $12.00, used 2- $1.00/1 Irish Spring M.C. and 2-40 cents/1 Soaftsoap Pump M.C.

Brought total down to $9.20 and recieved $6.00 ECB

This purchased qualified me for spend $10.00 on Colgate-Pamolive recieve $5.00 after Mail in rebate

So when mail in rebate arrives I WILL ACTUALLY BE PAID $1.80 for $12.00 worth of product

CVS allowed 2 of these ECB specials per household so I did bought more….

Transaction #2:   2 Softsoap Bodywashes @ $3.00 each,  2 Colgate Sensitvie Toothpastes @ $2.74 each, and 2 Lady Speed Sticks @$1.99 each

Total of $15.46, used 2-$1.00/1 Softsoap Bodywash M.C., 2-75 cents/1 Colgate Toothpaste M.C. and 1 Buy One Get One Free Lady Speed Stick

Brought total down to $9.97 and recieved $6.00 ECB   (I used the $6.00 ECB from the prevoius purchase s0 I actually only paid $3.97)

When mail in rebate arrives I WILL BE PAID $1.03 for $15.46 worth of product!

CVS also had the deal that if you bought 2 participating Pfizer products you would recieve a $4.00 ECB, I also had a Pfizer mail in rebate special from the paper that if you bought 3 pfizer products they would send you a $10.00 rebate.

So I bought 3-50 count Advil caplets at $4.49 each

Total of $13.47, used 3-$1.00/1 Advil Product M.C.  this brought total to $10.47 and I recieved $4.00 ECB (used $6.00 ECB from 2nd transaction above so I only paid $4.47)

When this Mail in Rebate check arrives I WILL BE PAID $3.53 for $13.47 worth of product.

So after these transactions I will be paid $6.36 for $40.93 worth of product and I still have a $4.00 ECB.

They also had a good deal on the razors my husband uses so I picked those up as well.

The moral of this long post is that sometimes a mail in rebate is worth the time.  Which, it actually only took me about 10 minutes to get everything together.  I was able to save a ton of money and got things that my family will use.  My husband actually loves Irish Spring bodywash but I never buy it because its not the cheapest.  Hope this helps motivate someone to save some money!!!

Rainy Day Crafts

We had horrible weather today, tornado warnings and pouring rain.  So we stayed in and I decided to make some more boutique bows for my baby girl.  When she was first born I bought I bow at a specialty store and thought to myself, as a spent $10, I could make this.  I went and bought a bunch of ribbon on sale and watched a few bow making tutorials on Youtube.  Needless to say now she has a bow for every outfit!  I wanted to get her Valentines outfit squared away so I could make some boutique bows with the leftover valentines ribbon I bought.  I will sell them at a local kids store.  I found a cute onesie at Walmart for $3.25 and some ribbon on ebay.  I got the bow made and part of the tutu.  I also made 2 more bows for some new outfits I picked up on sale.  I will post pics of her in her completed valentines outfit.

I Love Kroger…….sometimes

This week  Kroger has some awsome deals!  I don’t normally shop at my neighboorhood Kroger because to be honest it is kinda “ghetto”!  It is one of those tiny old school ones that does not have a florist department and no conveyor belts at checkout.  But when they have their Mega Event sales it is worth the funny smell and all the people with no teeth.  Now dont get me wrong,  I have nothing against people who are missing teeth…my husband it missing one of his front teeth (college baseball accident).  I just cringe everytime I walk in there.

Hunts canned tomatoes as low as 14 cents if you use this coupon I found on Hunts website

Sobe Juice or Water 79 cents

8 oz. Philly Cream Cheese $1.29

Easy Mac Cups 48 cents

These are only a few of the post worthy deals you can get at Kroger this week.

Links to Freezer Day Recipes

I am one of those a little of this, a little of that “chefs”, so I have a hard time following recipes.  That is why I DONT bake anything without the help of a Betty Crocker box.  Baking is too precise…I dont remember the last time I used a measuring cup.  So I followed this same practice when making all of my freezer day items, but here are the recipes that I used for inspiration.

Link to Ranch Potato Wedges  I added a little Tony Chahceres for some kick

Link to Sausage Foil Packets  I halved the recipe and only used green peppers

Link to Spinach Twice Baked Potatoes  I had some extra sour cream so I used that instead of cream cheese

No good sales this week :(

I always go out Sunday afternoon to hit Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS.  None of the above were having any good deals this week, which is disappointing.  I did pick up some 1L Listerine Zero, which is the ONLY mouthwash my husband will use.   At CVS if you bought 2 @ 5.89 you got a $5.00 Extra Care Buck and I had 2 $1.00 off coupons.  So that made them $2.39 each.  The only good thing about no deals is that I dont spend any money!

Freezer Day

So I went to Randall’s like I said to get the potatoes.  They were actually $3.99 for 10 lbs, but heck that is still a GREAT deal.  While I was there I checked the meat cases because I have been on the hunt for some cheap ground beef.  And to my suprise they had ground beef on special for $1.79/lb….SCORE.  Well at least in my area (Clear Lake, TX) that is a stock up price.  So needless to say my saturday turned into a longer freezer day than I had anticipated, but cant complain about good deals.  This is what I ended up with.

4 – 1lb bags of plain browned beef

3 – 1lb bags of taco seasoned browned beef

4 seasoned hamburger patties

3 bags of “loaded” mashed potatoes

2 bags of ranch potato wedges

2 sausage and potato foil packets

5 spinach & cheese twice baked potatoes

5 sausage & queso twice baked potatoes ( i had some leftover velvetta from a dip I made last week, so I mixed a little of the sausage from the foil packets, velvetta, and drained rotel)

I will post the recipes for the above

I am “almost” that crazy couponing lady!

About 2 months ago I was watching the Nate Berkus show.  Which I LOVE!  He had “the Krazy Coupon Lady” from the TLC show Extreme Couponing on as a guest.  I decided, what the heck, I’ll check out her website.    I read her info for beginners and the article “10 days to become a KCL” and decided to put together a”minimalist” coupon binder.  I was actually at Walmart and the lady in line behind me commented on my coupon binder.  I said thanks and started to say “oh, i am not one of those crazy…….” I bite my tongue as I look down and see her 5 inch thick binder that zipped up and had a sholder strap!!! I really wasn’t one of those “crazy” ladies yet.  But….about a month ago CVS had this crazy deal and after my coupons and Extra Care Reward bucks, they basiclly paid me to take away 3 boxes of Pampers!  I was hooked!  I got this excited almost high feeling about getting such great deals.  I guess couponing was my “drug” of choice.  Needless to say I now have a larger more organized coupon binder, have started doing multiple transactions and started stockpiling.  My husband is amazed at my savings and how much I have cut our grocery bill.  I am now able to buy name brand and pay less than the store brand.

“Loaded” Mashed Potatoes

This is an easy dish that can be frozen and cooked at a later date.  The recipe is for my freezer cooking day, so the quanities are large but you can scale it down.

5 lbs Potatoes: cubed but not peeled

1/2 cup ranch dressing

1 cup sour cream or more to your taste

1/2 cup real bacon bits (not those fake crunchy kind)

1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

salt and pepper to taste

Boil potatoes until tender, drain.  Mash potatoes and remainder of ingredients.  Divided into casserole dishes or into freezer bags.

Let potatoes thaw overnight in fridge.  Transfer potatoes, if in freezer bags, into a casserole dish and bake for 30-45 minutes at 375 degrees.

During last 10 minutes you can sprinkle top with more cheese and bake if you would like.

Great Deal on Potatoes

My local Randall’s is has a 10lb bag of potatoes on sale for $2.99, so I am picking up a bag and mixing up a few things that I can throw in the freezer to cook at a later date.   I will use about 1/2 to make my husbands favorite “Loaded” Mashed Potatoes and some more to make Ranch Potato Wedges.  The rest I store in a brown paper bag with some holes punched in it.  It is best to store potatoes in a cool dark place, so the bag goes at the bottom of my pantry.  I will post the recipes and more about freezer cooking.
